I was commissioned to make this little quail – he’s my first one! I had a lot of fun creating his very subtle markings. I had a picture of dry, cracked earth, which turned out to be perfect for those speckles of brown and grey. He’s quite a dainty little chap and looks rather self-contained and resilient. I think he’s a bird that you could rely on in a crisis, though hopefully that situation won’t arise. Not like a spoonbill – they’d be hopeless.
